Medical Assistant
MCC Medical Clinic is seeking a Full-time/part-time male Medical Assistant in a busy, community safety-net clinic in Silver Spring, MD. The Medical Assistant would perform basic clinical intake duties under direct supervision of the Clinic Manager. He would also perform various basic point-of-care diagnostic testing and assists Staff Physicians, perform routine outpatient medical procedures, and various clerical and administrative functions to ensure that clinical reports are reviewed by the Staff Physician in a timely fashion and that all patient charts are kept up-to date and filed according to Clinic policy. Also performs various housekeeping tasks to ensure a clean, organized and well-stocked patient care environment.
Essential Responsibilities:
• Document chief complaint, allergies, current medications and a basic social history on the encounter progress note.
• Measure and document vital signs on both the progress note and electronic medical record.
• Perform basic point-of-care diagnostic testing including, but not limited to; fingerstick glucose
measurement, urinalysis and EKGs.
• Administer and document vaccinations on both the paper chart and the electronic record.
• Assist Staff Physicians perform procedures including, but not limited to, routine gynecologic exams, pap smears and cervical and endometrial biopsies.
• Receive incoming diagnostic test results and referral reports to be reviewed by Staff Physician.
• Follow up with patients regarding diagnostic test results and referral reports.
• Fax/mail medical record requests as directed by the Physician Staff.
• Create, update and file patient charts in accordance with Clinic policy.
• Clean/sterilize contaminated medical equipment.
• Dispose of regulated waste in accordance with state and federal laws.
• Keep patient encounter rooms clean, organized and well-stocked.
• Any other clerical or administrative duties assigned by the Clinic Manager or Staff Physician.
The duties of the Medical Assistant include:
• Verification of patient information
• Confirming purpose of the visit
• Preparation of patient for examination (performing vital signs and entering data on medical records)
• Chaperoning doctors as required
• Providing patient education (i.e. diabetes education for newly diagnosed diabetics)
• Faxing/mailing medical record requests after approval of the physician
• Answering the phones as needed
• Acting as a liaison between patients and physicians
• Managing patient flow
• Sending prescriptions to the pharmacist
• Making sure that all relevant and recent lab tests are in the patient's chart before the doctor sees the patient
• Intake of patient's medication
• Give injections of vaccines and medications
• Conduct EKG test and dressing
• File charts
• Making sure the exam rooms are well-equipped
• Any other duties as assigned
The Medical Assistant reports to:
• Clinic Supervisor
Qualifications/Experience:
• Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
• Certificate or diploma from an accredited Medical Assistant training program highly preferred.
• Prior experience working in a clinical setting preferred.
• Experience interacting with an ethnically diverse patient population and/or fluency in a foreign language a plus.

Working Conditions

Weekend, shift work, holiday, on-call and overtime may be required.

Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment.

Work requires concentrated mental/visual effort when working on personal computer terminals for extended periods of time. Work involves exposure to minimal amounts of radiation from computer displays.
